Interim

Image
A change in direction for Tika just in time for interim. Feedback: -More colour iterations with brighter colours - brown blends into nature too much, too boring -Decorate the character page itself for more license context -Have an image of a child playing with the doll for play context -Have a variety of accessories

Tika #1

Here is the draft of the character sheet for the first iteration of Tika. Didn't get past this as my design changed a lot before I finished the character sheet

Bioplastics

Image
Looking into bioplastics and understanding what kinds are good and what kinds are not so good. Ordered this and this type of bioplastic from a company in Sweden. Honestly, I've no idea if it'll arrive in time or even at all. But fingers crossed, would be amazing if I could prototype in the plastic I want to use.

Wings

Looking at mechanisms for the wings and the possibility of having them flapable with a little notch/button. Flapping wing rings Feather wing tutorial  This playlist is very useful for seeing how joints work in Monster High dolls and seeing how to mend them

Field research

Image
Spent the morning wandering the toys aisle at the Warehouse getting strange looks from parents. Found some interesting things though and bought myself a doll which was an oddly liberating experience. Loved this funky piece, lots of fun bright colours. Not really in keeping with my doll's aesthetic though These were both reduced. I bought the one on the right though who was half the price, her paint job wasn't finished and she didn't have the funky hand bag. Interested also in the top heavy packaging of the one on the right though Had to get a snap of the infamous Elsa doll who owned the toy world after Frozen came out Loved this one, true to the character this doll wasn't as thin as the others and didn't have much breast like the others either. A role model for Tika Observing what else is popular; bright colours, disproportionate bodies, caricatured features etc.

Manufacturing research

How plastic dolls are made, the process A more modern version I think where they've stream lined some of the manufacturing . These 'Smart Dolls' by Danny Choo go through a similar process but there's much more care taken and it's more of a craft Then there's these dolls which are of really high quality, hand made, beautifully detailed and not for mass production Instructions on making a rubber mould and resin doll, though these instructions seem to be for a mixed doll without any moving parts And instructions on making a ball joint Bamboo as an alternative to plastic? Wouldn't be able to leave the doll out in the rain or take it for a bath but would be a worth while sacrifice if this is possible. This seems hard to come across though in order to experiment with this idea. I found out there are additives that can allow plastic to break done and biodegrade quicker. They cannot be recycled though There's amazing things happening with m...

Audience research

"Manipulation of objects is a common aspect of play ( Pellegrini & Smith, 1998 ). Toddlers use pretend play and start to imitate others. They know what common objects are used for and tend to use those objects in play. They may engage in pretend use of the objects on their own, with others, and in combination with other things such as household items and toys. In later stages of toddlerhood, the same skills are utilized but in a more advanced and developed way. Toddlers become more social and interested in what their peers are doing which results in play alongside other children." " Characteristics of the toy can encourage development in several domains, such as  cognition, social  skills, and fine and gross motor skills. Toys that include multiple parts, are lightweight with contrasting colors and textures, and offer multiple responses, often elicit the most successful play ( Lane & Mistrett, 2008 ). " " Distraction away from exploration with a toy...
